A Retirement Adventure Perhaps?

Submitted by rlewis on Mon, 08/02/2010 - 07:54.

Recently we got this email, and thought that it may be of interest to the more adventurous among us. We have accepted this offer at face value, but as we do not know Vic, do check it all out carefully, and perhaps seek the names and contact details  of others who have taken advantage of this.

Hello Ray
Retirement was supposed to be a number of years away for me, but was put out to pasture early due to injury. Not too bothered, pretty much lost interest in most things anyway. Never a house and garden person, TV is just rubbish, no real hobbies, sport bores me and golf I will leave until I'm 95.

My only interests have been travel, different cultures and little wooden sailing boats. That was, until a trip to Indonesia a few years ago, where I found some very large sailing boats, doing a cruise on one for a number of weeks. One day, laying on deck, watching the massive sails move us along like a big slug, G&T in hand, I had a fleeting idea, a kind of "what if" and I mulled over it for a while, then nodded off. Woken by a crew member offering another G&T, or am I ready for dinner sir? We had many more crew than guests, their were only four large suites on the boat.

That fleeting thought never left me, it was the thought of living the rest of my life like this, traveling round the world from port to port/anchorage, being as active or inactive as I pleased, living in luxury, being cared for and doing it on a pension. It had cost me about $2,000 for the three weeks in their off season, including all meals! The food was basic but very nice, I had an air-conditioned cabin with my own en-suite, quite large as well. A large bottle of beer was less than a dollar and smokes about the same. The other guests were all older folk, and we got on really well, in fact it was all so idyllic, we didn't want it to end.

I thought "why should it end" and after about five years of on and off research, came up with  www.realseachange.com.au

Now, I am not a business person, just don't have it in me, so the whole project is not for profit, only covering costs, and is simply an option for a few likeminded retirees, who may like to try something different. Weekly costs start close to the Australian singles pension at $350 covering all meals and boat costs as per the site.

The project will attract individuals from around the world, but I hope the majority will be Aussies.

Regards
Vic Zurek

A Lakes Entrance Weekender

Submitted by rlewis on Mon, 25/05/2009 - 12:19.

My wife and I just took advantage of a TV special weekend at Lakes Entrance.

We visited all over, and I had a very happy time fossicking for shells on Shelley Beach. (Red BLuff, just near Lake Tyers).

The people were very relaxed and friendly and the entire town had a good feel about it.

The huge fishing boat harbour added great ambience to the town.

Geoff and Sarah Mahlook of Wyanga Park Vineyard gave us a few tastes, regardless of the fact that the wine I was seeking was out of stock, and that was all I came for.

The food and service was good everywhere from the RSL to takeaways.  Special mention though to David Varney of One on One (1 the Esplanade), who provided excellent meals at fair prices, and made two 'greys' feel like old friends. He and his restaurant were quite special.
